…for a new job right now.

OK, I admit it. I was a complete nerd in high school. Driven by grades, grades, and grades.

It didn’t help that I had 5 siblings who were smart and ambitious, too. My brother Bernie led the pack with a solid 4.0 GPA. So, that was a lot to live up to.

I used to get a rush in September because it held the possibility of so many new beginnings: new subjects, new teachers, new extra-curricular activities. A chance to prove myself, in many ways, again.

Turns out, job seeking gets a rush in September, too. Fall is a prime time to find new job opportunities, and here’s why.

1. Stats prove Fall is a hot hiring season: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, October and November are some of the most active months for hiring. In the September Surge of 2023, employers added 297,000 jobs, the largest gain in 8 months. According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), this momentum continues into November and December as companies prioritize hiring before year-end, especially in industries like healthcare, construction, and hospitality.

2. Vacation season is over: Summer vacations often cause delays in the hiring process, with decision-makers and hiring managers unavailable to interview. But in the fall, it’s easier to schedule interviews and move through the recruitment process smoothly.

3. Recruiters are actively filling roles as fast as they can: Recruiters know the clock is ticking. They’re aiming to fill open roles in time for new hires to start at the beginning of the year. By putting yourself out there now, you’ll be on their radar as they ramp up their efforts to close open job orders before December.

4. Momentum builds as companies refocus: As the year’s end approaches, companies often reassess their priorities and focus on meeting performance metrics. This can lead to budget reallocation and a burst of hiring in the Fall to ensure teams are fully staffed to finish the year strong.

5. The job search cycle takes 3-4 months: The average job search for most companies spans 3 to 4 months. If you start looking in September, you position yourself perfectly for a job offer before the holidays.

Whether you were a cool jock, a drama geek, or a nerdy academic, you KNOW that job seeking in the Fall is a winning strategy. Start NOW by working toward a fresh role, a higher paycheck, and new challenges.
