You don’t know? Yes, you do.
Feeling lost in your career journey? You're not alone. Most of us feel lost sometimes, unsure of our next move. But guess what? Deep down, we often have a clue about what we want. We just might not want to admit it – even to ourselves.
So, if you're stuck in the "I don't know what I want in my career" loop, let's break it down. Here are five straightforward tips to help you find your way:
- Confront your fears: Recognize that fear might be holding you back – fear of failure, fear of success, or fear of the unknown. It's okay to be scared. But don't let fear stop you. Embrace the discomfort and use it to drive you forward. I’m currently working with a group of job seekers who are bravely moving toward a 30-50% raise in my BIG Salary Boost class.
- Reflect and explore: Take some time to think about what you love. About work. Is there anything you want to take with you to your next position? Look back at your past experiences – both good and bad – and see if you can spot any patterns. Try out new things, like volunteering or taking short courses, to see what clicks.
- Set small goals: Break your big goals into bite-sized chunks. Instead of trying to plan your whole career at once, focus on achievable steps. Commit to doing one thing each day that moves you closer to your goals.
- Seek support: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to friends, family, or mentors about your career conundrum. They might have insights or connections that could help you. Consider reaching out to me for a complimentary Career Strategy Session. In just 45 minutes, I promise to help you create 2-4 actionable ideas to move you forward.
- Stay open-minded and patient: Be open to new opportunities. Sometimes your next career is just a random phone call away. Stay patient and trust the process. Celebrate every small win and keep pushing forward.
It's okay to feel unsure about your career direction. But don't let indecision hold you back. Choose just two of the ideas above, and get started on them next Monday.
Here's to turning, “I don’t know” into “I’m on my way.”
