Put the Brakes on the Holidays

As the year draws to a close and we find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of holiday shopping and planning, it’s time to put the brakes on and stop to reflect. Remember that the most precious gift we can give to others doesn't come wrapped in shiny paper and bows.

It's the gift of our presence in their lives that truly matters. One small act of kindness, one genuine conversation, can leave a lasting impact that resonates for years to come.

Recently, I received an email from a Marine I sat next to on a plane a decade ago. At the time, he was brimming with eagerness to serve his country and embark on a long career with the Marines. Fast forward 10 years and life has taken an unexpected turn. He is now disabled and needs advice on re-tooling himself for a new career. What struck me most about his message was that he remembered our conversation from that flight 10 years ago!

It made me realize the profound effect we can have on others by simply being our best selves; by spreading the love and wisdom that we already possess. You don't need to be a professional coach or counselor to make a difference in someone's life; you need only be a person who is willing to listen, to empathize, and offer support.

Here are 6 simple steps to help you spread loving kindness in your world:

  1. Slow down: Walk slower, drive more carefully. Be aware of the people around you. Interact with the cashier at Walmart or your favorite grocery store. Ask people how they are, and then listen.
  2. Listen actively: In a world filled with distractions, give your full attention when someone is speaking to you. Make them feel heard, valued, and understood.
  3. Practice empathy: Try to understand and share in the feelings of others. Walk in their shoes, even if just for a moment, to foster genuine connections.
  4. Offer a helping hand: Extend your assistance whenever possible. Whether it's holding the door, lending a hand with a task, or offering words of encouragement, small acts of kindness can make someone's day.
  5. Share your wisdom: Don't underestimate the power of your life experiences and the lessons you've learned along the way. Offer guidance and advice when appropriate, as it may prove invaluable to someone in need.
  6. Spread positivity: Choose to radiate positivity and kindness in your interactions with others. A smile, a compliment, or a simple gesture of goodwill can brighten someone's day and create a ripple effect of positivity.

Each day provides an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life through acts of loving-kindness. So, let's be mindful of the impact we can have and strive to be our best selves, spreading warmth and compassion as we step into a new year.

Love and light,
