Jealous of career success?

When you notice yourself feeling jealous of someone’s car, home or career, consider yourself blessed.

Your inner desire is still working, trying to guide you to your next step. You have just tapped into something you desire, and desire is never a bad thing!

When a client tells me, “I want to be a speaker,” I take it as fact. The person is already a speaker. They have the desire, and desire drives us to activities that will make us successful. If you have the desire, you most likely have the talent to achieve what you want. All you need is training, practice and opportunity – and all of those are easy to get. I told a client recently, “Tell people you ARE a speaker, and it won’t be long before someone asks you to speak.”

Denying yourself what you want is denying who you are. Do it long enough, and you end up on the therapist’s couch, trying to figure out what you want in life. Instead of pushing back desire, take a good look at it and ask yourself: “How could I get started to achieve that?” Sometimes, the big travel trailer needs to be a pop-up camper. Or, the big 4-bedroom house with a pool needs to be a condo in a development with a community pool. Work toward your desires, getting as far as you can, NOW.

If you feel jealous toward someone’s success, go back and turn your jealousy into admiration. Go back and ask:

“How did you choose this line of work?”
“What education do you have?”
“What qualifications made the difference when you were hired?”
“What do you like best about your work?
“How did you land this job?”

Then, use what they say as a model for your next moves.Sound like cheating? Never. Following a model just makes good sense. Learn from the experience of others in order to shorten your learning curve.

In job seeking, we call it networking. No one does enough because each person is an endless wealth of experience, just waiting to help us, if only we ask.

So, the next time you think, “I could do that,” pay attention. Your next career move is tapping you on the shoulder.
